Cold-dip galvanized steel pipes are electroplated with a very low zinc coating (10-50g/m²). Their corrosion resistance is significantly lower than that of hot-dip galvanized steel pipes. The zinc coating on cold-dip galvanized steel pipes is electroplated, separated from the steel base. The zinc layer is thin and adheres only to the steel base, making it susceptible to detachment. Consequently, their corrosion resistance is poor. The use of cold-dip galvanized steel pipes as water pipes is prohibited in newly constructed residential buildings.
Cold-Galvanized Appearance
Cold-galvanized surfaces are typically smooth and bright, with coatings produced through color passivation appearing yellow-green or multicolored. The coating may also show blue-white or pure white finishes, while white passivation treatments tend to display a greenish hue. Under certain light angles, the passivated white coating can appear significantly more colorful. However, on complex-shaped workpieces, the angular sections are susceptible to "electric burning," resulting in darker, zinc-thick areas. Additionally, at inner corners, current dead zones may form, creating gray regions with relatively thin zinc layers. Overall, the surface may also exhibit zinc nodules and agglomeration on the workpiece.
Galvanized pipes are available in various types, including galvanized round pipes, galvanized square pipes, galvanized seamless pipes, and galvanized welded pipes. Typically, ordinary galvanized steel pipes are welded (seamed) pipes, while seamless galvanized steel pipes are produced only upon special request. Seamed and seamless pipes can be distinguished by measuring their outer diameter, as their manufacturing standards differ. For example, a 100mm diameter steel pipe has an outer diameter of 114mm if welded, and 108mm if seamless.
