Steel strand is a product made by twisting multiple steel wires together, commonly referred to as PC Strand. The surface of carbon steel can be treated with various coatings, such as galvanized, zinc-aluminum alloy, aluminum cladding, copper plating, or epoxy coating, depending on requirements. Generally, steel strands are supplied in coils for convenient handling. Upon agreement between both parties, additional protective packaging, such as moisture-proof paper, linen, or plastic woven fabric, can also be provided.

Classification of Steel Strands

1. By Application
   Steel strands can be categorized into prestressed steel strands, galvanized steel strands (commonly used in the power industry), and stainless steel strands. Among them, prestressed steel strands may be coated with anti-corrosion grease or paraffin and then wrapped in HDPE, forming unbonded prestressed steel strands. In addition, prestressed strands can also be produced using galvanized or zinc-aluminum alloy steel wires.

2. By Material Properties
   This includes carbon steel strands, aluminum-clad steel strands, and stainless steel strands.

3. By Structure
   Prestressed steel strands are available in configurations of 2, 3, 7, or 19 wires, with the 7-wire strand being the most widely used. Similarly, galvanized and aluminum-clad steel strands for power applications may come in 2, 3, 7, 19, or 37-wire structures, with 7 wires being the most common.

4. By Surface Coating
   Steel strands can be classified as smooth (uncoated), galvanized, epoxy-coated, aluminum-clad, copper-coated, or plastic-coated, depending on the surface treatment.

Specifications and Models of Steel Strands

Common specifications include 12, 13, 17, and 119, among others. The diameter of each single wire is typically indicated after the specification. For example, “1*19φ5” represents a steel strand made up of 19 wires, each with a diameter of 5 mm.

Applications of Steel Strand

Steel strands are widely applied as messenger wires, guy wires, core wires, or reinforcement members. They can also serve as earth/ground wires for overhead power transmission, roadside barrier cables, or structural cables in building frameworks. Prestressed steel strands, including uncoated and galvanized types, are extensively used in bridges, buildings, water conservancy projects, energy facilities, and geotechnical engineering. In addition, unbonded steel strands, or monostrands, are commonly utilized in flooring and foundation engineering applications.
