Angle steel, also known as angle iron, is a long strip of steel featuring two sides set at right angles to each other. It is classified as carbon structural steel for construction and has a simple cross-section, available in both equal and unequal types. Depending on structural requirements, angle steel can be used to form various load-bearing components or serve as connectors between different parts. The raw material used in its production is low-carbon square billet, and the finished product is supplied in hot-rolled, normalized, or hot-rolled conditions.

Angle steel is mainly categorized into two types: equal-sided angle steel and unequal-sided angle steel. The latter can be further divided into two variations: unequal-sided with equal thickness and unequal-sided with unequal thickness.
The specifications of angle steel are defined by the side length and thickness. In China, the available specifications range from 2 to 20, with the number representing the side length in centimeters. For each size, there are typically 2 to 7 different thickness options. Generally, angle steels with a side length of 12.5 cm or more are classified as large, those between 5 cm and 12.5 cm as medium-sized, and those below 5 cm as small-sized.
Orders for angle steel are usually placed according to the required specifications, and the steel grade corresponds to the applicable carbon steel grade. Apart from the specification numbers, angle steel does not have a fixed composition or performance series. Delivery lengths are categorized into fixed length and double length, with standard ranges in China including 3–9 m, 4–12 m, 4–19 m, and 6–19 m, depending on the specification.
Equal-leg angle steel has two sides of the same width. Its specifications are expressed in millimeters as side width × side width × side thickness. For instance, “∟30×30×3” denotes an equal-leg angle with a side width of 30 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. It can also be represented by a model number, where the figure indicates the side width in centimeters, such as “∟3#”. However, since the model number does not specify different thicknesses within the same type, contracts and technical documents should state both side width and thickness in detail, rather than relying on the model number alone. Hot-rolled equal-leg angle steel is available in sizes ranging from 2# to 20#.
The cross-sectional height of unequal-leg angle steel is determined by its length and width. This type of angle steel has an angular cross-section with unequal sides, with dimensions ranging from 25 mm × 16 mm up to 200 mm × 125 mm. It is produced through hot rolling, with common specifications ranging from 50 × 32 to 200 × 125 mm, and thickness options between 4 mm and 18 mm.
Unequal-leg angle steel sees extensive application across numerous industries. It is widely used in metal structures, bridge construction, machinery manufacturing, shipbuilding, and a variety of architectural and engineering projects. Typical uses include beams, bridges, transmission towers, cranes, ships, industrial furnaces, reaction towers, container racks, and storage facilities.
