The oxidation coloring of aluminum is a chemical process that primarily involves artificially oxidizing the surface of aluminum and its alloys. Oxidation method: During this process, an oxide film (Al₂O₃) is intentionally formed on the surface of aluminum and its alloy products, followed by the application of various colors. This enhances the material’s wear resistance, extends its service life, and improves its color and luster. The fundamental steps of aluminum oxidation coloring include surface preparation, oxidation, coloring, and subsequent treatments such as hydration sealing and organic coating.

Coloring Method:
The coloring of aluminum oxide films can be achieved through chemical coloring, electrolytic coloring, or natural coloring techniques.
Chemical Coloring:
In this method, anodized aluminum is immersed in an organic or inorganic dye solution, allowing the dye to penetrate into the pores of the oxide film and produce color through chemical or physical interactions. This process requires simple equipment, offers a wide variety of colors, and is relatively low-cost. However, it has limited light and corrosion resistance, making it suitable primarily for indoor decorative applications.
Electrolytic Coloring:
Here, anodized aluminum undergoes a secondary electrolysis process in an aqueous solution containing one or multiple metal salts. Under the influence of an electric field, metal cations migrate into the pores of the oxide film and deposit at the bottom, resulting in colors such as bronze, brown, gray, or varying shades of red, blue, and green.
Natural Coloring:
This method involves simultaneous anodizing and coloring of aluminum. It includes two main approaches: the alloy coloring method and the solution coloring method. The alloy coloring method controls the composition of the aluminum alloy to achieve different hues, while the solution coloring (or electrolytic coloring) method adjusts the electrolyte composition and electrolysis parameters to control the color tone. In practical applications, organic acids are typically used as the electrolyte for natural coloring, with a small amount of sulfuric acid added to fine-tune the pH value.
